Geographers of five thousand years ago
The Great Pyramid of Egypt weighs a lot, possibly 6,000,000 tons or more. It is easy to imagine that the Earth could have sunk down due to such a huge weight. There are very few areas of land that can support such a heavy building. If the pyramid had been built in Bangkok, the soil there would have caved in over time due to pressure and damaged the building. But despite the passage of thousands of years, and despite severe earthquakes in the past, the Great Pyramid has not suffered any significant subsidence.
Every architect today takes "stress" into account in their architectural design, and geotechnical studies and static calculations are performed to assure that the building is strong. In general, a building is allowed to withstand up to 15 cm of pressure in 100 years. But, the Great Pyramid has only withstood less than 1.5 cm of pressure in 5,000 years, which is unusual.
Great skill was shown in the selection of the place where this pyramid was built. Construction experts leveled the ground with an error of one centimeter in 230 meters. This shows that the geographers and engineers of the ancient civilization were highly skilled, even though they used simple instruments.
Was it just a coincidence that the Great Pyramid was built in this particular place? Is it possible that people thousands of years ago were smarter than people today, or that we still don't know much about them?
