Engineers at China Railway Construction Heavy Industry Corporation (CRCHI) have built the world’s largest tunnel-boring machine (TBM), weighing 10,000 tons and using ancient swordsmith techniques.

Inspired by the 2,500-year-old quenching method used for the Sword of Goujian, they applied this technique to strengthen the TBM’s steel bearing, which is critical for handling extreme loads and temperature changes.

With a diameter of 28 feet, this machine marks China’s dominance in TBM manufacturing, following years of research and technological advancements
