Pneumatic propulsion systems

Researchers from the University of Sharjah have developed a new propeller system to replace the electric and diesel engines currently used on ferries. This system is powered by an air motor connected to a propeller and uses onboard compressed air tanks.

The tanks can be refilled with air while the ferry is docked and waiting for passengers. The compressed air powers the motor, which turns the propeller. According to the researchers, this system is environmentally friendly, more cost-effective, and energy-efficient.

Pneumatic propulsion systems, which use compressed air to generate thrust, offer key benefits for short ferry trips. They produce low emissions, protect marine ecosystems, and require less maintenance due to their simple design. These systems also provide instant power and acceleration, making them ideal for quick bursts of speed. The environmental benefits extend to energy storage and other applications.

The team is now collaborating with Dubai’s Road and Transportation Authority and the Sharjah Water Sports Club to bring this technology to industrial use.
