How was Attabad Lake formed?

Attabad Lake is located in Wadi Hunza, Gilgit-Baltistan Province, Pakistan. This lake came into existence in 2010 as a result of a landslide. This lake is near the village of Attabad which is located 22 km upstream from Karimabad.

The incident took place on January 4, 2010 when a landslide killed at least 20 people and buried part of the Karakoram Highway and stopped the flow of the Hunza River for 5 months. At least 6,000 people were displaced and another 25,000 affected by the lake's formation and rising levels. Apart from this, the 19 km long section of the Karakoram highway was also submerged in this lake. In the first week of June 2010, the length of this lake was 21 km and the depth was more than 100 meters. At that time, the water started flowing over the temporary embankment created by the landslide. However, by that time the lower part of Shaskat and some parts of Gulmat had been submerged. Gojal sub-division was the worst affected by the floods where more than 170 houses and more than 120 shops were inundated. With the closure of the Karakoram Highway, there was a shortage of food and other essential supplies. On June 4, the amount of water released from the lake reached 3700 cubic feet per second 

عطا آباد جھیل کیسے بنی؟

عطا آباد جھیل وادئ ہنزہ، صوبہ گلگت بلتستان، پاکستان میں واقع ہے۔ یہ جھیل پہاڑ کے ایک حصے کے سرکنے یعنی لینڈ سلائیڈ کے نتیجے میں 2010ء میں وجود میں آئی۔ یہ جھیل عطا آباد نامی گاؤں کے نزدیک ہے جو کریم آباد سے 22 کلومیٹر اوپر کی جانب واقع ہے۔

یہ واقعہ 4 جنوری 2010ء میں پیش آیا جب زمین سرکنے سے کم از کم 20 افراد ہلاک ہوئے اور شاہراہ قراقرم کا کچھ حصہ اس میں دب گیا اور دریائے ہنزہ کا بہاؤ 5 ماہ کے لیے رک گیا۔ جھیل کے بننے اور اس کی سطح بلند ہونے سے کم از کم 6000 افراد بے گھر ہوئے جبکہ 25000 مزید افراد متاثر ہوئے۔ اس کے علاوہ شاہرائے قراقرم کا 19 کلومیٹر طویل حصہ بھی اس جھیل میں ڈوب گیا۔ جون 2010ء کے پہلے ہفتے میں اس جھیل کی لمبائی 21 کلومیٹر جبکہ گہرائی 100 میٹر سے زیادہ ہو چکی تھی۔ اس وقت پانی زمین کے سرکنے سے بننے والے عارضی بند کے اوپر سے ہو کر بہنے لگا۔ تاہم اس وقت تک ششکٹ کا نچلا حصہ اور گلمت کے کچھ حصے زیر آب آ چکے تھے۔ گوجال کا سب ڈویژن سیلاب سے سب سے زیادہ متائثر ہوا جہاں 170 سے زیادہ گھر اور 120 سے زیادہ دوکانیں سیلاب کا شکار ہوئیں۔ شاہرائے قراقرم کے بند ہونے سے خوراک اور دیگر ضروری ساز و سامان کی قلت پیدا ہو گئی۔ 4 جون کو جھیل سے نکلنے والے پانی کی مقدار 3700 معکب فٹ فی سیکنڈ ہو چکی
